Long Night of Music, Thomas Morus Church, Munich

For the Long Night of Music in Munich we have been invited to develop a light art installation for the newly renovated Thomas Morus Church.

We decided to work with texts from Thomas Morus out of his main work UTOPIA. He was a British philosopher and statesman fliving in the 15th and 16th century in London, GB.

During the evening several musician groups had a line up, divided by a fiktive interview with Thomas Morus, played by Anton Leiss-Huber, interviewed by Conny Glogger.

During the play of the musicians a static, space-filling projection covered walls and ceiling of the church. During the fictive interview and after the line up of the musiciians a 15 minute text-animation with the above mentioned texts from Thomas Morus was projected on the main wall behind the altar. The texts where:

MUSIK, BEI DEINEN ZAUBERKLÄNGEN ERSCHEINT UNS SPRACHE ARM UND KALT.

(MUSIC, IN THE FACE OF YOUR ENCHANTING SOUNDS, LANGUAGE SEEMS POOR AND COLD. )

TRADITION IST NICHT DAS HALTEN DER ASCHE, SONDERN DAS WEITERGEBEN DER FLAMME

TRADITION IS NOT ABOUT PRESERVING THE ASHES, BUT ABOUT PASSING ON THE FLAME

WENN EHRE PROFITABEL WÄRE, JEDER WÄRE EHRENHAFT.

IF HONOUR WERE PROFITABLE, EVERYONE WOULD BE HONOURABLE.

ERLITTENE ÜBELTATEN MEISSELN WIR IN MARMOR. EMPFANGENE WOHLTATEN SCHREIBEN WIR IN SAND.

WE CARVE THE WRONGS WE HAVE SUFFERED IN MARBLE. WE WRITE THE FAVOURS WE HAVE RECEIVED IN SAND.

ALLE ORTE HABEN DIE GLEICHE ENTFERNUNG ZUM PARADIES.

ALL PLACES ARE EQUIDISTANT FROM PARADISE.
